Google TV -SEO For Television?

Posted On October 15, 2010

Google just recently introduced what they are calling Google T.V. Basically it is a cooler version of Web T.V. which came out nearly a decade ago, but never really caught on. This is a major move by Google for several reasons. The first being that they are now entering an audience of over 5 billion human beings. Also, because T. V. has never been bound by traditional anti-monopoly software regulations (Thank you Microsoft) Google could potentially control every aspect of web browsing through television if their new little box were to gain major adoption. They wouldn’t just provide the search functionality, they would serve a major amount of the content and even push it in many cases.

It will be interesting to see how the public receives it. If Google T.V. does happen to become the new defacto for our favorite living room pastime SEO professionals will have a whole new mess on their plates. What do we mean? Well on top of optimizing for not only regular browser search results across more than one service as well as mobile search, SEO professionals have to worry about how to dominate search results displayed to consumers through television. If Google comes up with a different algorithm specific to T.V. (which they almost certainly already have) then we will have to start the guesswork and strategy building all over again.

That’s what we live for though. We think SEO professionals worldwide would agree that the game is half the fun. Google’s certainly having their own fun, when asked about how excited they are to be entering a whole new medium they wrote “We haven’t been this excited about TV since Saturday morning cartoons…. The coolest thing about Google TV is that we don’t even know what the coolest thing will be.” Google… we’re glad you’re having a good time.
